Begun as Stephen Schwartz’s Carnegie Mellon University thesis project, Godspell debuted off-Broadway in 1971, became a movie in 1973 and moved to Broadway in 1976. Schwartz received his second Tony nomination when Godspell was nominated for Best Score in 1977. Included in the final version of the musical is the song, "By My Side", composed by Peggy Gordon with lyrics by Jay Hamburger. The structure of the musical is that of a series of parables, mostly based on the Gospel of Matthew (three of the featured parables are recorded only in the Gospel of Luke). The parables are interspersed with a variety of modern music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns
Our accompaniment CD of songs from Godspell features 32 tracks. Tracks 1-16 contain the background tracks and guide vocals; tracks 17-32 contain the accompaniment tracks alone. All tracks are re-recorded by professional singers and are in the original show tempos and keys.
